Who is a candidate for bariatric weight loss surgery?

You may be a candidate for weight loss surgery if your body mass index (BMI) is equal to or greater than 35 and you have obesity-related health issues.

Types of Bariatric Weight Loss Treatments

Bariatric surgery works to restrict the amount of food the stomach can hold. Most weight loss surgeries are minimally invasive, meaning that they involve smaller incisions which can result in less scarring and shorter recovery times.

Dr. Packer offers these bariatric surgery options:

  • Gastric Bypass – your doctor reduces the size of your stomach to a small pouch and connects it to the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and some areas of the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. This allows patients to feel full faster, eat less and absorb fewer calories from the foods consumed.
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy – also known as gastric sleeve, this procedure removes approximately 80% of the stomach, reducing it to a thin vertical sleeve. Like gastric bypass, it restricts the amount of food that can be eaten and helps patients feel full faster.

Common Misconceptions about Bariatric Surgery

Misconception #1 - Too expensive and not covered by insurance.

The majority of insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover weight loss surgery fully or partially for qualifying patients.

Misconception #2 - Bariatric surgery isn’t safe.

Bariatric surgery is as safe as or safer than most commonly performed surgeries, including gallbladder surgery, knee replacement and appendectomy.

Misconception #3 - Weight loss surgery is a temporary fix.

Research shows that, on average, five years after surgery patients maintain 30% of their excess weight loss.
